The Forensic Genetics section has been operating since 2004 and belongs to the UOC Laboratory of Medical Genetics of the A.O. San Camillo Forlanini. The services offered are aimed at private clients (private citizens, lawyers, technical consultants of part) and institutional (judiciary, technical consultants, experts and law enforcement agencies). The laboratory carries out investigations based on advanced molecular genetics techniques whose results, depending on the case, are used to:
direct and indirect parental assessments (paternity, maternity, brotherhood, consanguinity tests)
verification of genetic compatibility between findings deriving from anatomo-pathological investigations and the patient
check zygosity between twins
identification of corpses with unknown identity
typing of the genetic profile from biological traces
Investigations carried out in the laboratory:
autosomal microsatellite DNA analysis*
chromosome X microsatellite DNA analysis*
chromosome Y microsatellite DNA analysis*
sequencing hypervariable regions of mitochondrial DNA
biostatistical analysis in direct and indirect parental investigations and in criminal proceedings
analysis and deconvolution of mixed genetic profiles
search and characterization of latent biological traces using forensic lights
immunochromatographic tests of nature and species
*accredited tests ISO/IEC 17025:2018
The laboratory also provides biostatistical interpretation advice on the results of investigations carried out at other facilities. As for the parental assessment analyzes requested by private individuals, each investigation is preceded and followed by a forensic genetic consultation in which the implications of the test are explained to the client and the results illustrated. The laboratory carries out research in the field of Next Generation Sequencing applications for identification purposes and collaborates with foreign groups for the study of population allelic frequencies. The structure is also included in the company procedure, provided for by the 2016 stability law, aimed at guaranteeing the collection and chain of custody of biological evidence in cases of gender-based violence and violence against minors.
EQUIPMENT AND ROOMS
The instruments, reagents and software used in the section are expressly dedicated to forensic applications and the work areas are structured according to the most recent international guidelines. The laboratory is made up of rooms with electronically controlled access, physically separate and specific for each operational phase:
preliminary examination of the finds and photo documentation
DNA extraction and pre-amplification treatment
post-amplification treatment
data processing and biostatistic analysis
The Laboratory achieved in 2017 Accreditation UNI CEI EN ISO/IEC 17025 for the proof Analysis of human genetic polymorphisms for identification purposes - DNA analysis for human identification
ACCREDITATION CERTIFICATE
The UNI CEI EN ISO / IEC 17025 Accreditation consists in the formal recognition of the technical and managerial skills of the laboratory, therefore it constitutes a guarantee for the customer that the execution of the survey is conducted in compliance with the highest quality standards regarding confidentiality, safety in the use and custody of the sample to be analyzed, technical-scientific skills of the staff and accuracy of the result. The UNI CEI EN ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation is also the international standard required of highly specialized forensic science institutes for the purpose of authorizing them to feed the National DNA Database established at the Ministry of the Interior (DPR 07/04/2016 n. 87 ).
ACCREDITATION CERTIFICATE ACCREDITATION BENEFIT
The team of professionals working within the section is made up of geneticists and expert technicians. Previous experience in the molecular genetics sector is required of the operators and the qualification for the autonomous execution of the analysis protocols is obtained after a path of support to the Test Manager. The laboratory regularly participates in the GEDNAP (German DNA Profiling Group) International Quality Controls for Forensic Genetics and periodically submits the instruments to certified technical checks.
